Vertical Tasting of Chateau Malescot Saint-Exupery (2020 February)

Hao Shen | Updated: Apr 9, 2020 10:43:34 AM

The winemaker of the chateau is the proprietor Jean-Luc Zuger who's a master of the cooler vintages. 35 years old vines on average. The vinification takes place in a combination of concrete vats and stainless steel tanks with natural yeast; pumping over, with quite long maceration for 3 to 4 weeks; partial MLF in oak barrels; the unfiltered wine is aged in 100% new French barriques for around 16 months.

Rich, sleek and nonetheless elegant Chateau Malescot Saint-Exupery 2011 was a darkly colored wine presented a charming bouquet of leather, white flowers, blackberry, ripe raspberry, underbush, spicy-mineral and earth. Chateau Malescot Saint-Exupery 2014 was a very classical Malescot, with plenty of sweetly floral fragrances and remarkable density that presented on both nose and palate. Chateau Malescot Saint-Exupery 2015 was very fragrant. The aroma of Chateau Malescot Saint-Exupery 2016 showed lovely density and depth graced by the typicallly sweet florality of Malescot. Chateau Malescot Saint-Exupery 2017 comprises 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot. Refreshingly pure on the slightly exotic yet very appealing aroma that showed a mix of spring flowers…(for all the details, please subscribe)…invigorated by brightly fresh acid. This drinkable effort had succulent fruitiness combined with a bit of firmness and creaminess so that the wine still retained excellent aging potential though it's approachable young. A candidate for the wine of the vintage. The crop of the 2017 was extremely low because of the serious frost--making a great wine in such a forgettable vintage needs the skill and courage.
