Vertical Tasting of Chateau Rongyuanmei Grand Reserve Syrah (2022 August)

The fruits of the flagship wine Grand Reserve Syrah come from Estate Vineyard in Ganchengzi where the vines are nearly 20 years old. Cold maceration for 5 days; the winemaker Zhongxiang Deng merely uses the second-hand oak barrels for the one year's maturation.

Gardenia, stone, crushed raspberry and sweet spices dominated the nose of Chateau Rongyuanmei Hong Fang Yin Cabernet Gernischt 2018 that didn't show any herbaceous notes due to the very late harvest. Incredible color and intensity as a 2018. The dense and suave finish was full of defined minerality. A tint of gorgeous oaks didn't hide the elegance on the exotic bouquet of Chateau Rongyuanmei Hong Fang Yin Malbec 2019 that was made up of white&blue flowers, menthol, black cherry, dried apricot, cinnamon-like sweet spices and stone. Intensely textured, with subtle baby fat offset by linear acidity and juicy fruitiness. Reticently floral Chateau Rongyuanmei Hong Fang Yin Malbec 2020 was dense and firm on the acidic finish. Chateau Rongyuanmei Hong Fang Yin Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah 2018 was freshly minty on the elegantly herbal and slightly floral aroma. Softely structured Chateau Rongyuanmei Grand Reserve Syrah 2015 was dusty and evolved on the scent with lots of barnyard, liquorice and herb notes. Linear acid enhanced the freshness on the dense mid-palate of Chateau Rongyuanmei Grand Reserve Syrah 2016. Chateau Rongyuanmei Grand Reserve Syrah 2017 was opulently woody (tobacco, vanilla). Chateau Rongyuanmei Grand Reserve Syrah 2019 was very saline and toasty. Chateau Rongyuanmei Grand Reserve Syrah 2021 was aromatically refined on the scent that was dominated by lashings of violet-like purple flowers and sweet spices (cinnamon, red liquorice) intertwined with…(for all the details, please subscribe)…that combined spellbinding florality, glossy texture and marvelous intensity as well as amazing persistence. A stellar and joyous effort with superb delicateness and ideal balance, which would only get better as it aged. Terrifically undervalued--the best Chinese Syrah I've ever tasted till now.
