Vertical Tasting of Puchang Vineyard Rkatsiteli (2022 September)

The winery has sent all samples of this tasting to our studio in Shanghai. Puchang Vineyard in Turpan obtained the organic certification in 2013. The winemaker Loris Tartaglia is not only a master craftsman of Cabernet Sauvignon but also good at making those rare varieties such as Saperavi, Beichun, Chinese Muscat, Rkatsiteli and Italian Riesling. Puchang Vineyard Chinese Muscat 2017 had a creamy yet poised and clean nose of rose, butterscotch, spicy-mineral and fig. Puchang Vineyard Chinese Muscat 2018 was aromatically clean on the sniff while mineral-driven on the palate. Puchang Vineyard Rkatsiteli 2014 was pretty nutty (mostly almond) on the slightly reductive nose. Puchang Vineyard Rkatsiteli 2015 was chalky, minty and fruited. The predominant aromas of Puchang Vineyard Rkatsiteli 2016 were bitter almond, water-chestnut and savoury-mineral, all concluding in a slightly dense finish that had medium plus body. Puchang Vineyard Rkatsiteli 2018 was faintly creamy but vibrantly citrusy on the nose led to the subtle juiciness on the clean palate. Puchang Vineyard Rkatsiteli 2019 was clean, austere and stony on both nose and palate with subtle salinity. Puchang Vineyard Rkatsiteli 2020 possessed too much salinity so that lacking of the elegance. Puchang Vineyard Beichun 2016 was like a fine Saint-Emilion. This finesse-styled wine showed a clean perfume of sweet earth, black chocolate, scrub, mint, stone, dried flower, blackberry and taro. The ethereality was enhanced by the linear acidity and delicate minerality. The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, Puchang Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is a straight Cabernet Sauvignon produced from a high-elevation vineyard where the vines are 35 years old. The grapes are hand-harvested; spending 16 months in completely new French oak barrels; without filtration. 2016 is a truly monumental vintage for the estate. A majestic opus of completeness, equipoise and layer. The limpid aromatics unfurled gracefully in the glass, revealing…(for all the details, please subscribe)…that peaked in the finale that was a rare integration of intensity, roundness and exquisiteness. Still in an infantile state of development, it needed to be cellared for 8-10 years but should keep for three decades or more. I have a hunch that the huge success of Puchang Vineyard will lead the renaissance of Xinjiang wine region.
