This petit chateau with nearly two centuries of history has 18.7 hectares vineyards where the soils are gravelly and clayey (without limestone), with more than 35 years old vines on average. Fermenting in the concrete vats and stainless steel tanks; basket press; aging around 20 months in 40% new French oak barrels. Doing a vertical tasting with Frans and Johan Roskam who are the 4th generation members of the family.
Chateau Cantenac “Selection Madame” 2020 had a hint of reduction that didn't hide the freshness of red fruits and red spices, there were some notes of undergrowth and savouy-mineral underneath. Chateau Cantenac 2009 possessed sweet, port-like noses that showed loads of dried fruits and nuts. However, the palate was fresher and cleaner. Not very complex, but tasty Chateau Cantenac 2013 was freshly aromatic, with loads of crushed red fruits and spices notes. Chateau Cantenac 2018 was sweetly perfumed on the earthy and spicy nose and palate. Chateau Cantenac 2019 was loveable and vivid on the nose of white chocolate, undergrowth, raspberry, savoury and white flowers. Very polished tannins made the palate approachable, with linear acid that gave the classy succulence to the end. The cellaring was required for Chateau Cantenac 2020 that was austere on the finish that was fresh and delicate. The barrel sample (9 months before the bottling) of Chateau Cantenac 2022 contains 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The best word to describe the style of Chateau Cantenac is 'classical'. Magically, it's very closed at the beginning but opening up rapidly after half an hour.
