Vertical Tasting of Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron (2023 October)

The estate was acquired by AXA group in 1987. Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron has three plots in total, but the only one in front of the chateau is used for the grand vin; 2-3% of the vines are replanted each year so as to control their average age within 35. Fermenting in stainless steel tanks and wooden vats; the percentage of the new oak has decreased from 80% to 70% since the 2020 while the duration in French barriques remains the same (18 months).

Without greenness, delicate, elegant and limpid Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2019 showed spices, earth, black fruits and stone aromas. Tasting again on Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron 2016, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron 2017 and Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron 2018 that were all pretty reticent during the tasting. Hope to taste the exceptional Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron 2019 again, which was very austere on the restrained and elegant nose of dried flower, stone, earth, scrub, spices and blackberry. Delicate and clean on the palate that was full of forceful tannins that led to subtle tension. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest is Merlot, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron 2020 stood out for its purity and nobility. The fragrant and enticing aroma was packed with…(for all the details, please subscribe)…plus subtle salinity that enhanced the freshness on the endless and satiny finish where the cornerstone was austere minerality. A new school that was perfect for immediate consumption though the beauty could be enjoyed for three decades or more. It's certainly the champion of the lineup when I was doing a vertical tasting at the winery.
